Local Luminary: Brendan Hoare

Hats off to the talented organic horticulture expert, Brendan Hoare.  Involved with Organics for over 25 years, he is Executive Director of Econation2020, team leader for the Journal of Organic Systems, and until recently a lecturer at Unitec in Auckland.  Unfortunately, Unitec recently scrapped its horticulture programme, but thankfully the Horticulture Sanctuary that has thrived since 1999 under the watchful eye of Brendan will remain on site.  Whie no firm decisions have yet been made, the sanctuary will likely be used by other organisations as a training site.

The 100% organically operated site is an amazing testament of what can be achieved using natural growing techniques, permaculture methods, and a lot of great compost.  Comparing the luch Horticulture Sanctuary to other garden projects on the Unitec campus and elsewhere will give any curious mind an opportunity to see just what can be created without chemical fertilisers and pesticides.  Visit the site to check out the garden and it's adjacent food forest-- a wooded area with edible bounty.

Brendan, hats off to you for your hard work and dedication!  You have created something truly inspiring.
