Barriers to Green Job Growth

HR, recruitment, and management take note: while there is hype worldwide that the green jobs revolution is going to change the workforce, there is also the growing realisation that it isnt going to happen overnight.  Paul Hannam of Bright Green Recruitment has worked in the industry for over 20 years and identified the following barriers to the development of the Green Economy (note: while this is written from a US/UK perspective, some of the trends hold true worldwide, especially for multinational companies):

1) Impact of the recession/short term focus on cost savings rather than long term vision and understanding of payback over time. 

2) Talent shortage/lack of qualified workers (especially problematic in industries throughout New Zealand)

3) Greenwashing- companies trying to make themselves and their products look better than they are, rather than trying to achieve genuine progress or change.

4) Need for government regulation- there is a need for progressive laws, policies, and subsidies to help support new sectors such as renewable energy to prosper at the same rate as existing industries (such as fossil fuels).
